So You Need a Flat Screen TV Stand

If you are like me, you got that brand new flat screen tv home and realized that you did not have anything to put it on. So now it is time to go out and start looking at the different types of flat screen tv stands available. When you do this you will notice that there are a plethora of tv stands available, but only a few will catch your eye. However before you make that purchase there are some things that you need to take into consideration.

First you will want to decide whether you want to mount the flat screen tv on the wall or if you do want it on a tv stand. For the sake of starters, we are going to begin with flat screen tv stands. Upon that decision you will need to determine what size and weight limitations you will need to look at when determining the type of stand you want. Once you have those things decided its time to begin looking at the different types of flat screen tv stands. Essentially there are only a couple different types such as the standard rectangular tv stand, the corner tv stand and the more robust entertainment center.

Corner tv stands will allow you to save a little space over the standard rectangular sized flat screen tv stand as it fits into the corner of your room and does not protrude into the living area as much. However, you will be limited as to where you can put the stand as you have to stick to the corners. The standard flat screen tv stand will allow you to put it anywhere in the room essentially but it might stick out into the living area a little bit more.

The more robust entertainment centers are also a good option but definitely space consuming if you are looking for something to save space. Now they have entertainment centers that can adjust to the size of your flat screen tv so that you are not always going to have the same sized flat screen to put into it. Entertainment centers are also considerably more in cost as well but if you have the money and space these are definitely a nice addition to the home and can bring great enjoyment.

As mentioned at the beginning of this article you might also consider flat screen tv wall mounts as well, which will allow you to mount the flat screen tv onto the wall. This actually is the best space saving option, but there are things to consider when deciding if this is the option for you. You will need to determine if you have the “know how” to actually make this work or whether you need someone to come in and professionaly install the tv wall mounts. This can be tricky as you will want to hide your wiring in the wall so that they are not sticking out everywhere. Whatever route you decide to go you need to get to looking at the tv stands available now so that you can start enjoying that new flat screen tv right away.

What Vista Means For “TV To PC” And “PC To TV”

tv center
by NASA on The Commons

The word “vista” has everything to do with vision, both in the physical sense and the mental sense; that is, a view through a row of trees or a view of the future. For Bill Gates and Microsoft, Vista is the name of their new operating software, which is their “vision” of the future of personal computing. Skeptics say that Vista is too security heavy, to the point of inconvenience, and that consumers should wait months or years until the bugs are ironed out. Mac users say that Vista is Microsoft’s attempt to offer a slick interface design that is much closer to their own. But the common criticisms aside, Vista has done its part in opening up a few new possibilities for home entertainment and TV viewing.

With either Microsoft’s Home Premium Edition or Ultimate Edition of Vista, you get “Windows Media Center” included in the package. This is also included in the Windows “XP Media Center Edition,” but is enhanced in the newer version. The purpose of the Windows Media Center is to provide a reliable interface to all of the media content on your computer, including music, photos, videos, as well as access to any online media you may want to link to or archive. You can access this content on your TV via remote control. In addition, you can access it on television sets throughout your home with something extra called a Windows Media Center Extender, which taps into your wired or wireless home network. The Xbox 360 functions as a Windows Media Extender, and many other devices have them built in, such as some high-definition televisions, digital media set-top boxes, and DVD players.

If that covers your PC to TV options, Vista has the potential to enhance your TV to PC capability as well. But before you can make your Windows Media Center enabled PC the entertainment hub of your household, you still need a few things. First, you need a Tuner Card, which enables you to receive TV signals directly to your PC. This can be either integrated into the computer (via a PCI card) or external, in the form of a USB adaptor. In order to take full advantage of Vista, and to make use of its Electronic Programming Guide, you’ll also need high speed Internet access.

With this equipment in place, Windows Media Center will automatically detect your TV configuration: over-the-air signal or a cable, cable plus set-top box, or satellite set-top box. If you have a set-top box, Windows Media Center will take you through a step by step set up process. Vista gives you the ability to record and archive content and also burn it to DVD (when this is not prohibited by the content provider). The system features a new sports section, thanks to a partnership with FOX Sports and NASCAR, which gives viewers access to scores and updates in real-time, and some free broadcasts of sports events online. It is also optimized for widescreen and high definition display, and puts the power of instant replay in your hands.

In terms of TV entertainment systems, this is a basic outline of what Microsoft’s Vista operating system has to offer for those who just can’t wait. Of course, as with many new software releases, no matter how much in-house testing occurs, new customers are still the best guinea pigs. So sometimes it’s better to wait and see.

Ten Tips for Building your Own Media Center Computer

With new faster processers, bigger hard drives and new larger LCD televisions building a media center computer has become more and more practical. A media center computer can record multiple television shows at one time, can organize all your music and pictures and can also be used as a normal computer. They are definitely very cool. However, before you decide to build your own media center here are ten quick tips…

1. Consider building a machine with a dual core or quad core processor. The multiple processing threads will be very useful when recording multiple programs and watching a program at the same time. A fast multi core processor is a must if you plan on watching and recording hi definition TV.

2. Don’t skimp on the RAM. A good media center will have at least 2GB of ram and should probably have up to 4GB. The ram will help keep things moving quickly while you are recording programs.

3. You can never have enough hard drive space. With high definition TV becoming more of a standard you are going to want to consider having large amounts of hard drive space on your machine. I wouldn’t build a machine that had less than a terabyte of hard drive space.

4. To increase performance considering using a raid configuration for your hard drives. Using raid zero along with high speed SATA hard drives can help you improve video performance and can prevent recording errors.

5. Get good TV tuner cards with built in hardware encoding. Tuner cards with MPEG hardware encoding will take a load off your processor when they record tv shows, this will help ensure that you won’t get any skipping or problems in your recorded output. I use Hauppauge cards in my machine and they work great.

6. Invest in a good decoding program. The software decoder software offered by Nvidia does a good job on my media center. However, I tested four or five different ones before I found one that operated the way I wanted with my hardware configuration. Be prepared to test some different options before you settle on the one that will work best for you.

7. Don’t forget to order the remote control. A media center without a remote control is a travesty. These computers are designed to operated while you sit back on your couch. The remotes don’t cost that much and they work great.

8. Buy the best video card that you can afford. The better the video card that you have the less chances you have that you will have problems with playback. Before you buy your video card also make sure to check the list of Media Center approved cards. If the card isn’t on there you might want to avoid it. Also make sure that you buy a video card that has a high definition output that matches your TV (either DVI or HDMI are the best).

9. Get a good audio card that is capable of feeding source audio to your receiver or your speakers. If you plan on outputting 5.1 or 7.1 data from DVD’s you are going to want to make sure that the sound card that you pick has an optical or digital coax output. You might also consider buying a card that will convert all the sounds used on your computer into a 5.1 or 7.1 digital audio feed.

10. Be prepared to play with your configuration and build. Unfortunately, building a media center is not an exact science and there is usually quite a bit of tinkering involved in getting a stable fully functional system. If you aren’t comfortable playing with the settings and the drivers to get things to work you might consider buying a prebuilt media center and have someone else do the testing and configuring for you.

I have been running windows XP media center edition for quite a while now and I love it. I have built two different media centers and they have both been a blast. Try it for yourself and see.

Big Screen Entertainment Centers

tv center
by State Library and Archives of Florida

If you have been to an electronics store lately, you will notice that big screen tv entertainment centers have dropped in price considerably from even a couple of years ago. I remember going to a trade show and seeing a big screen plasma tv selling for over ,000 dollars at the time.

Today, you can buy an HD or high definition LCD (liquid crystal display) TV for as little as 9 dollars. Some big box furniture stores even give them away free if you will buy a leather sofa and chair and you don’t have to pay with 0 interest for say two or three years, so it makes it very affordable to have big screen tv entertainment centers today. My personal favorite for watching TV with surround sound is watching concerts like my Live 8 live DVD that I have featuring some of my favorite artists such as Madonna, Sting, U2, Mariah Carey and others.

When you consider how many tv channels are available today, particularly movie channels that now carry movies in High definition and any movies that you can rent today are also available in high definition, it makes more sense than ever to look at buying big screen entertainment centers for your home.

Shopping Tips

- Check out stores like Best Buy and Circuit City and talk to store salesman particularly in stores like Best Buy because the salesman are not paid any commission and will spend more time explaining the technology and options available to consumers.

- Check out neighbourhood computer stores as they offer a computer solution instead of using a stereo for your setup. Computers today are so powerful you can have a big screen TV and a computer running everything else like Computer Video Games, Music and Movies all with wireless remote and surround sound using computer speakers instead of stereo speakers.

- Check websites online that offer reviews on TVs and entertainment centers.

- Check your local flyers that come in your mailbox for deals or sale items.

- Visit websites like Craigslist.org and Kijiji for used items.

Just remember to take your time and visit stores that offer helpful advice so that you can educate your self on the newest technology and you will find the best deal on big screen entertainemnt centers in no time.
